GS United Commitment to Excellence
GS women’s team assistant coach Hayden Fitzpatrick acknowledged the team short falls at the national championship. “It was the elephant in the room” he said.
In talking to the team Captain Danielle Blair and she went into more detail.
“We got to the point where winning (gold) at the nationals was our only option” she said. Danielle Blair was also voted MVP of the 2018 Canadian Women’s Nationals tournament Dan- ielle Blair and had the Play of the Tournament as far as GS United Coaching staff is concern. In their first game at the Nationals GS Women’s team defeated Quebec 3-1 on goals by Captain Danielle Blair, Gisenia Utreras and Jessie De Boer With the momentum they defeated New Brunswick 6-0 in the second game on goals by Shannen Jainudeen (3), Laura Callender, Gisenia Utreras and Victoria Watson And of all the game that Captain Blair received the Play of the tournament was in a loss in their third and last group match1-0 against Alberta. The team advanced on goal difference after Blair stopped a sure goal which would have eliminated GS from the Gold Medal game had they of lost the game 2-0. Laura Callender scored the lone goal for GS United Women’s team to defeat BC United 1-0 in extra time in the National Championship final. The goal was the result of a head on from a long throw in the first half of extra time. GS Women’s has finally taken on the character- istics of the club. It is their ability to bounce back after disappointment. It may have taken five years but their perseverance is the not just the trademark of the club it is a lesson for the other 7 teams in the club to acknowledge. GS United has currently has about 48 different nationalities within its rosters which is a testa- ment to management’s appreciation and ac- ceptance of people. “We will always be receptive to good human beings in our organization” said Dave Sidhu (GS United spokesperson). GS United also has a player development pro- gram through a House League of Boys and Girls from the ages of 6 to16. The club is supported by the Gursikh Sabha (G.S.) Temple.
