On April 27 1994, South Africa held its first truly democratic election. Nelson Mandela prevailed, and reconciled the race differences to form a new ‘Rainbow Nation’ as President.

NELSON MANDELA SQUARE Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton City was definitely the place to be. It was where the action between the Mexico and Bafana fans occurred and just down from there was the Sandton Convention Centre which displayed exhibits which ranged from the 32 participating team uniforms to the official balls used at past FIFA World Cups. Sandton Convention Centre also catered for most of FIFA World Cup Conferences and in an adjoining room was the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) studio.
